Valhalla Coffee Review: Best Bean On Our Site?

If you are like me, you are wondering if these Valhalla coffee beans from Death Wish are really as good as the reviews say they are.  After all, the reviews are both numerous and off the charts positive!

Well, after you read this Valhalla Coffee Review, I promise that you will know the answer.

I promise to pull no punches in this review.  And, I will let you know what to believe and what not to believe.  In addition, I will provide you my personal experiences with Valhalla.

Death Wish Valhalla has the highest ratings I’ve seen on Amazon for coffee beans.  Actually, for just about any product with over 1,000 reviews.

This was why I purchased these coffee beans for my spouse last Christmas (Death Wish did not provide these in exchange for anything) .  I just had to see if these were as good as advertised.

Before we get into some of the features of Valhalla, let’s see if these coffee beans are even affordable.

What’s the real story?

In this Valhalla Coffee Review, I dig a little deeper to see just how much Valhalla costs when compared to various categories of coffee.

We did a little research and took the average of the top 10 coffee bean brands in the following categories and ranked them in order from highest cost to lowest cost.

We also broke out the high price and low price for each category for extra data points.  And, calculated the average Amazon rating for the selected top 10 per category of coffee beans:

As you can see, Death Wish Valhalla Java Coffee Beans are a little pricey when compared to just about any category of coffee bean.  Even so, Valhalla is less than the high price in each category.

You’ll have to decide for yourself if this is a deal breaker.

Features Of Death Wish Valhalla Coffee Beans

Before we get into the Pros and Cons in this Valhalla Coffee Review, let’s first discuss the various features Valhalla coffee beans offer.

Eco-Friendliness and Social Awareness

Death Wish as a company does actively participate in programs that promote health and fairness.

The coffee beans that are produced by Death Wish all are Fair Trade certified.  You can view the seal on the back of the packaging for proof.

In addition, Death Wish only uses coffee beans that are organically grown.  You can read more about the commitment that Death Wish has made to Green initiatives and Fair Trade on their web site.

Taste

Using Robusta coffee beans was one of the reasons I was very suspect of the high reviews.

During all of my research while managing The Coffee Bean Menu, one thing is clear.  Robusta coffee beans have a reputation of tasting like burnt rubber.

But, is this true?

When I read through the reviews for these beans, I was very surprise how positive the reviews were regarding taste.

After all, Death Wish created their Death Wish brand based off the idea that they would provide coffee that would practically wake you from the dead through an infusion of caffeine!

On the Valhalla bag, it even reads:

With maximum flavor and caffeine content, the coffee will bring you
back from the nights you thought you’d never wake up from.

With Valhalla, Death Wish has created what they call an an Odenforce Blend of coffee beans.  That means that they are blending both Indonesian coffee beans (likely the Robusta beans), and Central and South American coffee beans (likely the Arabica beans).

What’s the real story?

The result is a taste that is described as:

• Chocolaty
• Nutty
• Sweet
• With a Smooth Finish

My experience when my spouse shared a cup of the Christmas day gift I bought her was that this description was spot on.

The taste was strong, but with a sweetness about it.  And, there was no hints of bitterness, or burnt rubber!

Roast

Death Wish Valhalla is a dark roast.  So, if you don’t fancy a dark roast, this isn’t the bean for you.

When I say dark, this is at least a Full City Roast.  And, I would even say it might be closer to a Vienna roast, but probably in between the two.

Of the few complaints that have been written about these beans, being “too dark for my taste” is the most prevalent.

Acidity

With Valhalla being a darker than average roast, it’s no surprise that the acidity of the coffee it produces is very low.

This could be one of the main reason for the high reviews.  Often a bean with more brightness, or more acidity can cause stomach side effects for many coffee drinkers.

Neither my spouse, nor I experience any acid stomach issues.  And, the coffee did not taste high in acid.

Body

The body of Valhalla was what you would expect from a dark roast coffee bean:  full.

I would also describe the body as full.  The texture and heaviness was palpable.

It was the type of body that I personally look for when enjoying a good cup of coffee.

Caffeine

This is where Death Wish makes it’s name.

Robusta coffee beans are well know to have a higher caffeine content when compared with Arabica.

Somehow Death Wish is able to get enough Robusta beans into this blend without compromising on the taste.  I’m not sure how they do it.

But, not only did my spouse and I feel it, reviewers comment on this in droves.

Consistency

I have not ordered Valhalla very many times.  So, I can’t say with high certainty how consistent these coffee beans are.

What should you look for?

What I would be looking for is a consistent roast (no under roasted or over roasted beans).

I would look for a full bag to be delivered.  And, that the bag is high quality and not damaged.

I would also look for consistent oiliness of the beans.  Especially with a dark roast, you want the amount of oiliness to match the level of roasting.

Bottom line:

For my one purchase, Death Wish was exceptional.  As I make more purchases, I’ll update this section with how they continue to deliver (or not).

So, what do others think?

I can say that Valhalla has well over 1,500 Amazon reviews.  And, there is really only two bad (1 or 2 star) reviews that question consistency.  This is pretty amazing and speaks volumes about the consistency of this product.

Are The Reviews Real?

There are well over 1,500 reviews on Amazon for these Valhalla coffee beans.  At the time of this writing, Amazon reviews rated Valhalla a 4.8 out of 5.0 stars.

However, when we tested the validity of the reviews on FakeSpot.com, we found that FakeSpot gives Death Wish as a company a “B” rating.

But, there’s a catch.

During the writing of this review, the rating for Valhalla specifically changed from a “B” to an “A”.  So, I’m not sure what to think about that.

At some point, the reviews that were written were probably suspect.  However, either Death Wish has gotten better at writing fake reviews, or some poorly written early reviews have finally been overcome by a wave of better written reviews.

Are You Not A Morning Person?

So:

If you wake up in a stupor and are a real grump until you get your morning cup of coffee, then this coffee might be able to help you out in the morning.

Or, if you need a little external kick via caffeine to help you get up and going at full speed, this coffee should help.

There’s no denying it.

This coffee is loaded with caffeine.  But, if you don’t rely on a coffee kick first thing in the morning.

Or, if your caffeine needs are met through other means, you may be able to find other coffee beans that are a little less expensive.

Are You Willing To Pay A Little More For High Quality?

Here’s the brutal truth about Valhalla:

Death Wish Valhalla Java Coffee Beans are not cheap!

They taste great and provide the coffee kick you expect.

However, you can probably get similar qualities with a less expensive coffee bean.

Much of these attributes were talked about in length above.  So, I won’t go into a lot of detail here.

Can You Do Better Than Valhalla?

It’s only fair to assume that not everyone will fall immediately in love with this Death Wish product.  So, in this Valhalla Coffee Review, I am taking the safe road.

How so, you say?

If you are one of the few that fall into the low percentage of people that don’t find Valhalla coffee to be right for you, I have researched and provided several alternatives.

Good, But Less Expensive Alternatives

Here are some great alternatives if you were not looking to spend nearly as much per pound.

For me these coffee beans are good.  Just not as good as Valhalla.  But, if you can’t afford the ticket price for Valhalla on a daily basis, than maybe Valhalla can be a coffee treat that you partake for special occasions.

These coffee beans can be your every day GOTO coffee beans:

• Eight O’Clock: These medium roasted coffee beans are an excellent every day coffee.  They provide very mild fruity notes.  And, they are inexpensive, yet still provide good quality.  Plus they are Kosher.
• Cafe Don Pablo Subtle Earth Organic Gourmet Coffee – Medium-Dark Roast: Cafe Don Pablo is a coffee company that we have featured many times on our site.  You will find these coffee beans to be great tasting, lower caffeine than any Death Wish product, and very affordable.
• Philippine Robusta Green, Unroasted: If you are one that likes to cook your own beans, and you want to stick with a higher caffeine Robusta coffee bean, these are a great alternative that is also very affordable.

Alternatives With Less Kick

If high caffeine content isn’t really what you’re looking for, then I would recommend going with a full Arabica coffee bean or just simply going Decaf.

Here are some coffee beans that fit this description:

• Organic Mexican Half Caff Coffee from Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC: A really nice alternative to decaf.  And, Fresh Roasted Coffee is featured all over The Coffee Bean Menu for a good reason.  Their coffee ROCKS!
• Mommee Coffee – Quarter Caff: If cutting caffeine in half is isn’t enough, but you don’t really like a full decaf, this coffee made by a Mom for Mom’s is a nice alternative.
• Don Pablo Decaf Swiss Colombian Gourmet Coffee Decaffeinated: Once again Don Pablo bubbles to the surface of our research with this gourmet coffee bean.  The coffee beans are decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process (SWP).

Valhalla Coffee Review: The Verdict

For Death Wish Valhalla Java Coffee Beans, I give this coffee bean Five Stars:

Like the title of this Valhalla Coffee Review suggests, we have long thought that this coffee bean blend is just a step above the rest.

We were convinced enough during our original research to persuade me to include these beans in my spouses Christmas stocking.  And, they didn’t disappoint!

The only real down side is the price.  But, even at this price, I still recommend at least giving it a try as a special occasion coffee.

If money isn’t an issue.  Or, if you don’t think the price is too high, then if you like the coffee profile I describe above, you really can’t go wrong giving these coffee beans a try.
